  • The year 1986 marks the unfortunate happening of Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster, making it probably one of the darkest years in the history of Mankind. A nuclear reactor in a power plant went out of control causing a big explosion, the impact of which was spread across entire Europe. The impact was so high that the United Kingdom even witnessed Radioactive Rain. But what exactly happened that led to all these catastrophic consequences? Who is responsible for this disaster that costed the Soviet Union $235 Billion? Watch this video by Dhruv Rathee to find out, as he explains the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster of 1986 in detail.

As a Chemical Engineer we studied this disaster deeply. Most of the chain reactions have 3 steps, Initiation, Propagation and Termination. In the case of Nuclear reactions the Termination step is more important than the other two. Generally the reactions containing very high temperatures have a risk of thermal runaway which occurs when temperature is high and it produces more heat and this heat increases the temperature further and it goes on and on. Basically in control loops a Set Point is fixed to which we want any parameters to reach (Temperature, Pressure etc;), so a measuring device measures the value and the comparator compares it with set point and the difference or the error between them is deducted from the set point in the case of Negative feedback loop while in positive feedback loop it is added to the set point and it's value increases more and more. The same concept is used in the Geysers at home. Sometimes the highly resistant silicon containing polymers are used with metals which can deal with sudden volume expansions and it works at high temperatures also.
Some great work done by Dhruv and Team.👏

The basement of hospital in which those fire fighters were admitted still have their radiated clothes, shoes, helmets, etc
And you can visit that control room too!

Yes. They should have abandoned the test when the Kiev grid controller forced the reactor to stop the test in the planned shift and forced them to wait till 11:00 pm, instead of the 2:15 pm plan originally laid out. The initial crew who were trained and prepared for the specific operations of the test were out of the duty, and the new crew had to familiarize themselves with the test requirements very quickly.

The design flaw was present, but during the natural working conditions, the control rods would drop rapidly and the contact of the atoms with the tip would be for a fraction of time and that wouldn't spike the reaction that much.
Although, during that unfortunate day, there was more than usual steam, that didn't let the control rods drop as the pressure in the chamber was immense. That made the control rods to not drop and be jammed. That made the tip to be in direct contact with the atoms and that too for a prolonged period. Which caused the explosion. BOOOM!

The entire video is very informative and beautifully explained in the simplest way it could be. But one point which was not addressed by Dhruv Rathee was regarding why the Xenon actually formed. The power grid of Pripyat city provide the supply of electricity to Chernobyl Power Plant, the test was meant to be conducted in the morning hours of 25 April 1986 which could not due to insufficient power supply and hence the entire reactor 4 was running at 1600MW power for 10 hours, this caused the formation of Xenon inside the reactor. Knowing this fact Viktor Bryukhanov and Nikolai Fomin ignored it completely. On top of all this the night shift workers and engineers were not informed about the test before, neither were trained for the test. And the chain of incidents as explained in later video provoked to the complete disaster.
